Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show

On Nov. 18, hundreds of people packed into the sunny ballroom at the Ottawa Convention Centre.

Shoppers leafed through dangling necklaces and clattered through trays of brooches. Many waited their turn to squeeze in for a peek. The vintage glasses, many with the lenses popped out, were a hit. People craned their necks around crowded mirrors to see how they looked in horn-rimmed or Lennon-style frames.

Photographer Eilon Paz, whose Dust & Grooves project documents all things vinyl, explains that records shape not just how music sounds but how you experience it: “You have to take it out, you have to put it on the turntable, you have to put the needle on — these are all actions that demand attention from you.” He theorizes that while CDs threatened to make records obsolete, the shift to MP3s has spawned nostalgia for physical objects. This short documentary, produced by Kornhaber Brown for PBS, includes interviews with film professor Al Nigrin, Ryan Martin of Dias Records, Rebecca Cleman of Electronic Arts Intermix, and David Bias of the Impossible Project, which rescued the last Polaroid production facility in order to keep producing instant film.

Death of the Drive-In

The drive-in, born in the 1930s, has been through the Great Depression, World War II, poodle skirts, flower power, disco and hair metal — a simpler time before technology became a daily part of our lives and when “movie night” meant more than just seeing what was playing on Netflix.

But one by one, the lights went out.

ONLINE EDITOR (1): You will work alongside our Assignment Editors to post content to WordPress and create multimedia content using Storify, Soundcloud, Veritae, Thinglink and Google Fusion Tables. You will also be expected to write blog posts for our Tumblr and other social media sites, and will assist in the development of our iPad app and e-book project. Preference to applicants with a knowledge of HTML and CSS.

FACT CHECKER (4): If you want to learn more about online editing, are interested in proofreading and have debates about the Oxford comma, this is a great opportunity for young journalists to work with our editorial staff. You will also get to write short briefs, participate in story meetings as well as seminars on lede writing and story development.

RESEARCHER (4): You will work together with our Assignment Editors in gathering information for stories, you’ll be expected to attend weekly story meetings, help book interviews as well as write short factoids and longer essay-length pieces for our new Voyageur section. Preference to history and journalism majors.

ILLUSTRATOR: If you are the creative type, can meet deadlines and have a strong attention to detail, we are looking for designers to work alongside members of the editorial staff. As an illustrator, you will get many opportunities to contribute to the magazine every week and here are just a few great examples: 1, 2, 3

EVENTS & MARKETING: If you are highly organized and deadline-oriented, you will work on planning small events, help acquire new volunteers, assist with print and online marketing campaigns, write sponsorship letters and assist with marketing strategy.
